Marital Mediation is a process used to resolve conflict within a marriage. This type of mediation is conducted like any other accept the mediator will provide coaching and references to educate the couple on how to resolve the conflict and communicate more effectively. It helps spouses negotiate issues that they are unable to handle directly with eachother by improving listening and expressive skills.
Marital Mediation can assist couples in overcoming common challenges that often lead to divorce, Such as disagreements over finances, spending patterns and contribution in the marriage, different parenting responsibilities, household responsibilities, different communication styles and other relationship issues, dividing household chores, intimacy issues, infidelity, career conflicts, conlicting religion, family and friend conflict, trouble with in-laws, job loss, inheritance.
Why ignore the problem?
Why yell?
Protect your children from witnessing the stress of marital discord.
Prevent separation
People often "jump the gun" to separation and divorce when they are having marital problems because they do not know of any other option. The difference between a marriage that lasts and a marriage that breaks down is lack of communication and lack of conflict resolution skills however, these skills can be taught.
Because most Marital Mediators are usually Divorce Mediators the couple will be dealing with someone who has a lot of experience with financial matters, issues with children etc and can call in experts when needed. In some cases, the Children may be brought into a Family Mediation session especially if the couple has teens.
During the mediation sessions , the couple will have the opportunity to talk about their issues with the marriage or with their partner. The mediator will listen and provide input and offer suggestions while promoting mutual understanding and productive communication between the couple. In some cases the mediator may suggest the drafting of a Postnuptial Agreement. A Postnuptial Agreement is a voluntary contract created after the marriage to resolve conflict.

Marital Counseling is conducted by a mental health professional with training in social work and psychology. Marital counseling involves a diagnosis of issues past, present, family history, mental health, personal history , therapy and treatment of personality and relationship problems. The counselor will then analyze the information and help the parties understand their behaviors.
Marital Mediation is different because it involves dispute resolution. Marriages as well as in life are filled with problems. The mediator will work with the couple to help them resolve their disputes by learning how to negotiate better with their spouse “fight fair”. The couple will learn effective communication and active listening skills.
There is usually less resistance by a spouse to attending a mediation session then a marital counseling session. The classic “ I don’t need therapy!” There’s no blame in mediation.
DO I HAVE TO BE MARRIED TO GO TO A MARITAL MEDIATOR?
The answer is No. Many unmarried couples use Marital Mediation as a tool to resolve their relationship disputes. If a formal agreement is needed then the Mediator will prepare a Cohabitation Agreement.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE TRY MARITAL MEDIATION AND DECIDE WE WANT TO SEPARATE AND DIVORCE?
In this scenario the couple can move right into Divorce Mediation to work out the terms of the Separation and Divorce. Often the same Mediator is used since they are already familiar with the couple's issues in the marriage and that's an added benefit.
